Children Population Within Fukui Prefecture, New Record Low

With Children’s Day on May 5th, Fukui Prefecture compiled and released a report regarding the population of children under 15 years old within the prefecture. As of April 1st, 2021, there has been a decrease of 1,769 compared to the previous fiscal year, down to a new record low of 93,759 children.

48,091 of the population under 15 years old are boys, while 45,668 are girls, translating to 105.3 boys for every 100 girls. Sorted by age, 28,430 are 0 to 4 years old, 30,748 are 5 to 9 years old, and 34,581 are 10 to 14 years old. Children at 14 years old make up the largest age demographic of children at 7,070; a downwards trend can be seen, with the population numbers decreasing along age groups, with children at 0 years old making up the smallest demographic at 5,213.

The population of children under 15 years old makes up for 12.5% of the total population within Fukui Prefecture, a 0.2 point decrease from the previous year’s 12.7%. Among the other age groups, those 65 years and older make up 31.2% of the total population, a new record high, further strengthening the phenomenon of the declining birthrate and the ageing population. Those ages 15 to 64 make up 56.3% of the total population within the prefecture.

Fukui Prefecture made the estimates based on the 2015 national census data, looking at births, deaths, and changes in residence.

May 5th Report

On May 5th, Fukui Prefecture reported 5 new COVID-19 infections, bringing its cumulative total to 915. As of this day, there are 102 active cases within the prefecture, of which 1 is in serious condition.
Brief details of the 5 cases are as follow.

The Fukui City female company employee (30s, #1) is a close contact of a Fukui City male (under 10) whose COVID-19 infection was reported on May 2nd.

The Fukui City unemployed male (60s, #3) is a close contact of a Fukui City female (50s) whose COVID-19 infection was reported on April 28th.

The Sabae City female company employee (60s, #4) is a close contact of a Fukui City female (60s) whose COVID-19 infection was reported on May 4th.
