SEIBU Fukui Fully Reopen, City Bustling With Energy

After Roughly One Month of Customers Tired of Waiting, One After Another

On May 21st, SEIBU Fukui (located in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture) reopened its whole shopping centre, after roughly one month of being closed, in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Bustling with customers, eager for the shopping centre’s reopening, the city centre is regaining its energy little by little.

At 10:00 a.m., the store manager and sales staff reopened the shopping centre to greet customer who had been tired of waiting, entering one after another, and heading to their desired sale sections.

A Fukui City woman (aged 82) expressed with joy, “I had been passing by this shopping centre once a week, waiting for this place to reopen.”

Another Fukui City woman (aged 42) with her daughter commented, “With not much time left to shop in the SEIBU Fukui Annex (which will close down next year), the business shutdown was a sad occurrence.”

The shopping centre has implemented multiple infection countermeasures, such as setting up plastic sheets at the cash registers to prevent infection through respiratory droplets, and placing sanitizers in various areas of the mall, including entrances. The business hours have also been reduced to 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

SEIBU Fukui manager Hitoshi Ono expressed, “We wish to create an environment where both customers and staff can feel safe.”

Excluding the food sections, SEIBU Fukui has been closed since April 18th.
