Mask Purchase Tickets to be Mailed From April 23rd

Fukui Prefecture Announcement, Distribution Across All Households In Response to the Novel Coronavirus

On April 19th, Fukui Prefecture announced that the prefecture will distribute a purchase ticket for 2 boxes of face masks (containing a total of 100 masks) to each household within the prefecture, as a response to the difficulty in obtaining the masks, as an effect from the continuous spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The tickets, printed on a pink postcard, will be sent out from April 23rd. The Fukui Prefecture Business Establishment and Operations Department addressed in a statement, “We have secured an amount for all households to feel secure and be able to purchase the masks. We wish for everyone not to panic, and to be composed.”

The masks will be sold for ¥2,350 (tax included) for one box of 50 masks. Up to 2 boxes can be purchased at the closest Genky, a drugstore. Distribution of the tickets are expected to be completed by April 30th. The masks can be purchased during April 24th through to May 10th. There will be multiple varieties of masks, but no choice will be given on what kind of mask will be received on purchase. Resale of the masks will be prohibited.

On April 23rd, the Mask Project Centre will be established within the prefectural office, operating from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and will respond to inquiries. The centre’s phone number is 0776 (20) 0749.

According to Fukui Prefecture, this is the first within the country for a prefecture to act as a mediator in distributing mask tickets to its citizens. A Genky manager stated, “The goods will be divided into multiple batches and delivered. For the sake of avoiding the ‘Three Cs’ (Closed spaces, Crowded places, and Close-contact settings), we wish to avoid any period of crowding on the first day of sale, and any time during the operating hours.”
